Review: Something About You by Julie James

Title: Something About You
Author: Julie James
Series: FBI/US Attorney, book 1
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Publisher: Berkley
Format: E-book

“Staying overnight in a luxury hotel, Assistant U.S. Attorney Cameron Lynde overhears a high-profile murder involving a U.S. Senator. Special Agent Jack Pallas is assigned to the investigation-the same Jack Pallas who still blames her for nearly ruining his career three years ago. Now the pair will have to put their rocky past behind them, focus on the case at hand-and smother the flame of their sizzling-hot sexual tension.”

Assistant U.S. Attorney Cameron Lynde decides to pamper herself with a weekend getaway in a luxurious hotel. The floors in her house are being refinished, and she is also exhausted after a 3 months racketeering trial. She plans to have a spa day, a restful night and a delicious brunch.
But her relaxation plans are cut short thanks to the couple next door and their very loud sex marathon. Cameron is trying to sleep but the Oh My Gods, Oh yeahs, spanking (yes, spanking) and the bam-bam of the bed against the wall make it impossible for her to fall asleep. She’s patience, but after couple of hours of this non-stop she is very tired. She is ready to call front desk when she hears the man climax and then the noise stops. Minutes later she hears the sound of the next-door shutting. She finds this suspicious but don’t give it a mayor thought, falling asleep almost immediately. Soon after she’s awaken again by a loud noise next door, followed by muffled squealing and the bed banging against the wall. Cameron had enough and calls Guest Services to complaint about the noise in room 1308. Minutes later she hears again the door opening and thinks they heard her and were escaping before security shows up. She looks through the peephole of her door and sees and tall man leaving quickly, he’s wearing a hooded t-shirt with the hood pulled up, and he takes the stairs instead of the elevators. Cameron finds this very unusual.
She is eavesdropping waiting if hotel security is going to follow up after her complaint. She wants to know what explanation the woman is going to give.
Security shows up, knocked at the door of 1308 room couple of times and after hearing no response decided to enter the room, finding a woman dead in the bed.
Police arrive to the crime scene; she is question by the police and is also asked to remain in her room. She is now the sole witness to the crime.
A U.S. senator is involved in the crime; the murder woman was the escort he spent the night with.
FBI Special Agent Jack Pallas and his partner Wilkins are call to investigate the crime.
Special Agent Pallas worked with Cameron 3 years ago trying to bring down a biggest crime organization of Chicago. Jack had worked two years undercover in this organization procuring lots of incriminating evidence, he is discovered and torture for two days until his captors make a mistake and he is able to escape.
At that time Cameron’s boss decides not to prosecute this organization, his reason for doing this is lack of evidence, he considered what they have is not enough for this big profile case. Jack’s work and sacrifice of two years is a completely waste. This infuriates Jack and when he is interviewed by a reporter he makes very insulting remarks of Cameron on Nation television. After this the FBI decides to sanction him by transferring him to Nebraska. And he blames Cameron for the fall down of his career. What he doesn’t know is that she didn’t have anything to do with that, she even saved him for being fired from the agency.
When Cameron learns that Jack will be the FBI agent in charge of the investigation she is more than surprise, she didn’t he was back in Chicago. Seeing each other for the first time after the incident is not a happy reunion. The tension and bad feelings between them is not something easy to look over. But now they will need to leave their feelings behind and work together to solve this case.

I love Cameron and her high heels. She is a lovely, funny and honest woman. Family and friends are very important to her. Jack is a sexy and strong man with a very alpha personality. The tension between these two is palpable since the first time they see each other and grows by page. The evolution of their romance is well pace and believable, with very sexy scenes.

The supporting characters are very likeable and in my opinion they enhance this book. They give us a lot of laughs and great moments.
I love Cameron’s best friend Collin. He’s an amazing friend. They love each other, and you can also feel that their friendship is real.
Jack’s partner Wilkins is another character I really like; he’s a perfect complement for Jack. The good cop, bad cop routines really apply to then. As Jack can be perceive as dark (not in a bad sense) Wilkins is light.
I also like a lot the conversations when Officers Phelps and Kamin were included. They always brought a smile to my face.

I cannot compare to previous books of Julie James, this is the first book I’ve read by her. I’m really glad I listened to Julie from Yummy Men and Kick Ass Chicks, when she recommended me this author.

Something About You is a very enjoyable contemporary romance with a hint of suspense and a couple of twists along the way. Is well written and is entertaining. The characters are strong, likeable and have great chemistry among them.

Julie James is an author to follow. I can’t wait to read her next book, A Lot Like Love.
