“It’s a nice day for a white wedding. At least that’s what Secret McQueen is hoping for, with her poofy-princess-dress marriage to a werewolf king looming closer and closer by the day. But as ever, nothing can be that easy for a vampire/werewolf hybrid for whom someone still harbors a death wish.
Summoned to the south by her werewolf uncle, who makes no bones about the fact her mate bond with Lucas doesn’t pass muster, Secret learns her furry heritage looks more like a tangled vine than a family tree. Getting her royal uncle’s blessing hinges on finding one of the missing twigs. Even with vampire sentry Holden Chancery at her side, she manages to land up to her neck in a swamp of trouble.
As an assassin’s scope zeroes in, family dramas boil up and a fast-collapsing love square threatens to bury her alive, making it to the church on time could be the least of Secret’s problems.
Contains a grumpy bride who shouldn’t be wearing wedding white, a motley crew of bridesmaids, a dangerous scenic drive in the woods and a smoking-hot trio of suitors who might be too scorching to touch.”
Keeping Secret is the fourth book in the Secret McQueen Series by Sierra Dean.
Let me start this review by saying what a book! What a ride and I need a strong drink!
From page one I got ensnared in story and wasn’t able to put it down once. Life around me stopped existing, there was only Secret and me. Food? Husband? What are those? Yes, this is one of those books.
As the blurb says, in this installment Secret is summoned by her uncle and Southern Werewolf King, Callum McQueen. Like it or not Secret is by birth one of the Southern werewolf princesses and to get married with Lucas they need Callum’s approval. Saying no it’s not an option. Also with Callum’s approval Secret and Lucas union will bring peace between the territories, or at least that’s what they hope. Desmond stays behind while Secret travels with Lucas to visit her uncle. A visit like no other where she experiences first hand the life in a werewolf compound and when she learns a lot more about her maternal family.
Callum asks Secret to do a task; a test to prove her strength and her willingness towards the marriage. Callum promises to give his blessing and let her marry Lucas if she is able to complete the task without any werewolf helping her. Callum never said anything about vampires and lucky for Secret Holden had followed her South and helps her with her mission.
I don’t want to give much away, let’s say Secret completed the task and is ready to married Lucas, but things are never black and white for her, they are usually more on the side of Red and in this book things are not different.
Book by book we have seen Secret grow and in this book we see this growth even more. She is not thinking that much about herself but more about the bigger picture and how her actions affect others. She has come to accept that her marriage with Lucas is a necessity to the pack and is ready to accept her responsibility. Same with the Vampire Tribunal, she is trying to be a part of it; despite Juan Carlos bitchiness she is doing her best, even though her responsibilities might compromise some of her love ones, but things need to be done and she knows it.
This positive change is not affecting what we love about Secret; she is still the sassy kick ass heroine that we love and wish for once to be happy, with who? We don't know yet.
Lucas, what can I say about him. If you know me or follow me on Twitter you may know that I really liked him in previous books, I can almost say I was Team Lucas. Why am I talking in past tense right now? Because Lucas did something in this book that if I was Secret I would cut him in little pieces and give them to the alligators. But at the same time that’s Lucas, his actions were not bad intended, those were the actions of the Pack’s King and as he has said many times “the pack comes first”. Do I like it? No. I understand his motives but he should have handled the situation differently. I can’t wait to see how is he going to come out of this one, but I really don’t see a good outcome.
Desmond is not present much in this book and the parts he was in were a little heart wrenching. He loves Secret deeply and is hard for him to see her with Lucas, even more now that she is going to marry him. But that doesn’t mean Secret doesn’t love him, she loves him more than Lucas and this marriage is also breaking her heart, but the pack is a priority a they both know it.
Holden, Holden, Holden, let’s say every book I like him more and more, I love his strength, his witty humor and his sarcastic attitude. I also love how he is always there for Secret, he loves her, admires her and as the predator he is he’s waiting for the perfect moment to “pounce” his victim (Secret). *swoon*
We also see some of Sig, I’m dying to know what is his story, I know there is something important about him and Secret. Mrs. Dean has been giving us little clues but not enough; I want to know more about him. Please Mrs. Dean give me more Sig.
Keeping Secret is an action packed, non-stop page-turner that will keep you on the edge of your seat. With amazing characters that you wish they were your friends, ok, with the exception of the creepy-evil villains, those could die a slow and painful death. The world building in this series is top notch and with the introduction of the Southern Pack (and neighbors) it became a more complex and interesting one.
The end of this book was a “How dare She end the book like that?” The She is the Evil Author also knows as Sierra Dean.
When I got to the end of this book I thought my copy was missing pages, but not, it wasn’t! So what did I do? I went immediately and contacted Mrs. Dean, and asked her is not so many words “how dare she?” She was kind enough to tell me not to fret, she is planning to start fifth book right were Keeping Secret ended. I may have told her I was expecting it to start the latest at 0.0001 seconds after the end of Keeping Secret, I trust her, so now, to say the least, I’m eagerly waiting for next year to the release of next book.
The last thing for me to say is if you haven’t read this book you need to read it NOW. Keeping Secret is my favorite book in the series and that is saying a lot because I have loved ALL the books in this series. And if you haven’t read this series in which world are you living? Secret McQueen series is a Must read to all urban fantasy lovers and Sierra Dean is an author to follow close. I’ll read everything she writes, even her grocery list.
