"Roshar is a world of stone and storms. Uncanny tempests of incredible power sweep across the rocky terrain so frequently that they have shaped ecology and civilization alike. Animals hide in shells, trees pull in branches, and grass retracts into the soilless ground. Cities are built only where the topography offers shelter.
It has been centuries since the fall of the 10 consecrated orders known as the Knights Radiant, but their Shardblades and Shardplate remain: mystical swords and suits of armor that transform ordinary men into near-invincible warriors. Wars were fought for them, and won by them. One such war rages on the Shattered Plains. There, Kaladin has been reduced to slavery. In a war that makes no sense, where 10 armies fight separately against a single foe, he struggles to save his men and to fathom the leaders who consider them expendable.
Brightlord Dalinar Kholin commands one of those other armies. Like his brother, the late king, he is fascinated by an ancient text called The Way of Kings. Troubled by visions of ancient times and the Knights Radiant, he has begun to doubt his own sanity.
Across the ocean, an untried young woman named Shallan seeks to train under an eminent scholar and notorious heretic, Dalinar's niece, Jasnah. Though she genuinely loves learning, Shallan's motives are less than pure. As she plans a daring theft, her research for Jasnah hints at secrets of the Knights Radiant and the true cause of the war."
The Way of Kings is the first book in The Stormlight Archive by Brandon Sanderson. Narrated by Kate Reading and Michael Kramer.
There are some books you are not planning to review, but after finishing them they leave you in awe, and you just know you need to spread the love for them, and what better way to do it than to write a review, even if it’s a short one. That was the case with this audiobook.
The Way of Kings is what I call a masterpiece. This audiobook was so fantastic that I don’t think I can write a review without gushing too much about it, so I just going to keep it simple. This audiobook is one you NEED to listen, go, do it now. Is that enough? No? You greedy people!
I’m pretty sure reading The Way of Kings must be a very nice experience, but listening to it it’s something else, it was simply perfection. This audiobook is made of awesomeness! I know it’s long (45 hours, 37 minutes), but it’s so good you won’t feel the time passing, so much that for three days in a row I went to bed after 4 in the morning listening to it. I just couldn’t stop listening. Instead of one more chapter, it was 10 more minutes, 10 more minutes… It's been a long time since I've been so entangled in a story.
Kate Reading and Michael Kramer do an excellent job bringing to life the many characters that compose The Way of Kings. Before starting this audiobook I knew they were going to do a good job; this is not my first time listening to audiobooks narrated by them, but I just have forgotten how good they really are, and now, I can’t help but feel amazed by their talent.
The Way of Kings is epic fantasy at its best. The world Sanderson created is unique, complex and fascinating. The characters are multilayered and so well developed you will feel invested in their stories.
Sanderson masterfully interweaves different subplots, connecting them all in a way that will surprise you and will leave you in awe, wanting to know more.
What is the story? Read the blurb, that explains pretty well what this book is about. Saying more will be giving too much away and this is a book (audiobook) you need to discover and savor all by yourself.
The Way of Kings shows us why Brandon Sanderson is considered one of the best fantasy authors. If you are a fan of the fantasy genre this is an audiobook you need to listen. Trust me, go, listen/read it and thank me later.
I don't have time to say anything else... second audiobook of The Stormlight Archive, Words of Radiance, awaits me.
