Title: Grim Shadows

Genre: Paranormal Romance, 1920s

It’s the Roaring Twenties in foggy San Francisco. Prohibition is on, inhibitions are low, and dark magic is rolling into town…

Archaeologist Lowe Magnusson is packing something everyone wants. The djed amulet, a priceless Egyptian artifact, will fetch Lowe a hefty paycheck from one of San Francisco’s wealthiest. But when the handsome Swede runs into his patron’s uptight daughter, what he once considered easy money becomes maddeningly complicated…

Cursed with deadly spirits as her constant companions, curator Hadley Bacall must keep calm to hold her dangerous specters at bay and prevent them from lashing out at anything—or anyone. Trouble is, Lowe is driving her crazy, but her father needs the artifact he’s transporting. While Hadley can feel the amulet’s power, she can’t fathom the destruction—or the desire—it’s about to stir up.”
Grim Shadows is the second book in the Roaring Twenties series by Jenn Bennett.

Lowe Magnusson has live his whole life under the shadow of his older brother, Winter, wanting to make a name for himself; not in the bootlegging business as Winter, but in the archeological field. Still, Lowe’s business is not completely legal; he uses the artifacts he discovers to con buyers with fake replicas. The artifact he found in his latest excavation in Egypt is something that will make him rich, he’s sure of it. He has many buyers already lined up, the most prominent of them is Archibald Bacall, a museum director who is dying to get his hands on the djed amulet Lowe found. Archibald is not only offering him a hefty sum, he’s also offering his job, a job his daughter, Hadley - who is a curator at the museum - wants and deserves.
Archibald has dedicated his life to look for the djed. Many years back he found two small pieces that complement it, but his wife hid them before dying, leaving only a few clues behind. Archibald wants Lowe to find the pieces to make the artifact whole, that’s his only condition to pay the hefty sum and to hand over his job.
Hadley offers Lowe her expertise in exchange of her father’s job. Lowe is used to working alone, but there is something in Hadley that he can’t resist and together they embark in this new adventure.

Lowe is a liar, a con artist and a charmer. He’s handsome and smart; he knows it and uses it to his advantage. Under his all-carefree fa├žade hides a man in pain and trying to prove his worth to others. Despite not being the perfect hero, he is a character impossible not to like (although my heart still belongs to Winter, first book in the series).
I kind of felt bad for Lowe, even though nobody is asking, he feel he needs to prove to others that he can be as successful as his brother is.

Hadley is a tough cookie. She had a very difficult childhood and doesn’t know what is to receive affection. Her emotional deprivation has made her a very cold woman, or at least that’s the image she wants others to perceive of her. She doesn’t know how to express her feelings, or even more she doesn’t know how to feel. Here comes Lowe, the perfect warm man willing to take the time thaw her heart.

While Lowe is easy going and buoyant Hadley is very analytical and down to earth. They complement each other perfectly balancing their shortcomings and strengths.

Lowe knows he has to take his time with Hadley and slowly he starts to seduce her. Their romance is slow built, but very satisfying. As I said before they are perfect for each other.

Grim Shadows is fast paced and with some surprises along the way that will keep you on the edge of your seat. The action starts on the very first pages and doesn’t slow down until the very end, making of this installment a great addition to an excellent series.

I have said it many times, Jenn Bennett knows how to write, and she does it again and again. Her Arcadia Bell series in one of my all time favorite urban fantasy series and now, The Roaring Twenties series will forever have a place on my favorite shelf.

Next book in the series, Grave Phantoms, will feature Winter and Lowe’s sister, Astrid. I can’t wait to read her and Bo’s story.

My Verdict: 4 Paws
