Title: Seventh Grave and No Body
Author: Darynda Jones
Series: Charley Davidson, book 7
Genre: Urban Fantasy
Publisher: St. Martin's Press
Source: Review copy from publisher
“Twelve. Twelve of the deadliest beasts ever forged in the fires of hell have escaped onto our plane, and they want nothing more than to rip out the jugular of Charley Davidson and serve her lifeless, mangled body to Satan for dinner. So there’s that. But Charley has more on her plate than a mob of testy hellhounds. For one thing, her father has disappeared, and the more she retraces his last steps, the more she learns he was conducting an investigation of his own, one that has Charley questioning everything she’s ever known about him. Add to that an ex-BFF who is haunting her night and day, a rash of suicides that has authorities baffled, and a drop-dead sexy fiancé who has attracted the attentions of a local celebrity, and Charley is not having the best week of her life.

A tad north of hell, a hop, skip, and a jump past the realm of eternity, is a little place called Earth, and Charley Davidson, grim reaper extraordinaire, is determined to do everything in her power to protect it.

We’re doomed.”
Seventh Grave and No Body is the seventh book in the Charley Davidson series by Darynda Jones.

Charley is dealing with the news she got in previous book and trying to make changes in her life to accommodate her new circumstances, one of them is having a healthier diet, one that doesn’t include coffee and as we know Charley without coffee is a terrifying sight.
If dealing with caffeine withdrawal wasn’t enough to get a girl crazy, Charley also has the constant overbearing company of Reyes, who hasn’t left her side since the moment they learned the Twelve were after Charley. Charley understands his need to protect her, but she needs space to breath and to do her work, especially when she has couple of cases that need her attention. Luckily for her she has Cookie, her amazing assistant/best friend who supports and helps her in all her endeavors. And Cookie knows how to make Charley’s life easier.

Seventh Grave and No Body has everything I love from previous books, a kickass heroine, a swoon worthy hero, a superb cast of supporting characters, and enough action to keep you entertained from beginning to end, all that balanced with the perfect amount of humor and many laughing out loud moments to make the reading experience an unforgettable one.

In Seventh Grave and No Body we see Charley coming into some of her powers, we also see her discovering new things from her heritage and some new truths about the prophecy she is supposed to fulfill.

Darynda Jones doesn’t shy away in this installment, with some unexpected deaths is easy to see she’s not afraid of hurting her characters. Although I applaud her courage, I can’t help but be worried for what is to come in future books.

Seventh Grave and No Body is everything I was expecting it to be and more. It not only made me love this series even more (I didn’t know it was possible), it also made me want to listen to the audiobooks, something I’m currently doing.

Seventh Grave and No Body is a must read for fans of this series. Even though it could be read as a stand alone I don’t recommend you to do that, to get the full effect of the Charley Davidson series you need to read these books in order, starting with First Grave on the Right and continuing from there on. If you haven’t read this series what’s wrong with you you need to fix that soon because you are missing one of the most brilliant urban fantasy series in the market.

To say I’m eagerly waiting for the release of next book in this series, Eighth Grave After Dark, is the understatement of the year. May 19th, 2015 can’t come soon enough.

My Verdict: 4 ½ Paws

Other books in the series
Third Grave Dead Ahead
Seventh Grave and No Body (October 21st)
Eighth Grave After Dark (May 19th, 2015)

Excerpt:

Still covered in duct tape, he turned on his side to face me, his flesh straining against the binds. “You would tell me if something were wrong, right?”
“What do you mean? Of course, I would.”
“So, if you knew something could happen to you, you’d let me know.”
Where was he going with this? “Yes. Nothing is going to happen to me. Well, unless the Twelve get ahold of me. Other than that, I should be fine.”
He nodded in thought.
“Reyes, what is it?”
“I think you keep secrets from me.”
“You keep secrets from me,” I said, teasing. “Seems only fair.”
He leaned forward and nibbled on my ear. “We can decide who gets to keep secrets and who doesn’t later. Until then, want to do it?”
“Reyes!” I said, appalled. “You just had your arm nearly ripped off at the shoulder.” That and the fact that a grown man asking me if I wanted to “do it” was hilarious.
“We can still do it.”
I giggled. “No, we can’t.”
“I’m very creative with my mouth.”
“I am well aware of that.”
“You should sit on my face.”
A bubble of laughter escaped again. “I am not sitting on your face. Oh, my god.”
“Just sit on my face. I’ll make all your dreams come true.”
“You really need to practice humility,” I said.
“Humility is overrated.”

  1. This was a great book. I got to listen to an arc and it was everything I expected from a Charley Davidson book. Action packed, funny, though I was not happy that there were tears two books in a row. Great review.

  4. There's nothing like a bit of friendly competition! Making the rounds to check-out what my opponents are up to. This installment was extremely difficult to review sans spoilers, but I think you did an excellent job. Lorelei King's narration definitely gives these books an extra push for me.
