2015 Audiobook Challenge: 1st Quarter Update & Giveaway

This First Quarter has been enlightening in many aspects. One of them is that I realized I’m enjoying listening to audiobooks more than reading books. Another one is that I learned I need to let go of audiobooks that don’t work for me and not try to keep listening for weeks, even though I’m not enjoying them. That was the case with The Palace Job by Patrick Weekes. I bought that audiobook after I read Jessica’s review (Rabid Reads). She loved the book and I wanted to love it too. I tried listening for three weeks! I was so decided to like it that I didn’t listen to anything else while I was crawling through it. I think deep down I knew that if I started another audio I would give up completely on the audiobook and I wanted to finish it and like it. Damn it! After a chat with Loupe  (Hot Listens) she opened my eyes and gave me the little push I needed to make the decision of DNF-ing it. Now, I think back and I realize how stupid I was. Do you know how many great audiobooks I could have listened during those three weeks I lost trying to like something I was never going to like? *headdesk*

These are the audiobook I listened during this first quarter. They are organized in chronological order starting with the first audiobook I listened in 2015.

The level I signed up for in this challenge was Marathoner (Look Ma No Hands) 50+ Audios.

34 audiobooks!! I think I did pretty well… Ok, I don’t think… I actually did pretty well this first quarter… even though I lost three weeks. Damn you The Palace Job! *cries*

As you can see, I did a binge on the Kate Daniels and the Jane Yellowrock series. The Kate Daniels is a series I loved in books, but now after listening to the audiobooks I think I prefer it on audio. The Jane Yellowrock was a new-to-me series. It’s pretty good, but after a while I needed a break. I will continue with it in couple of weeks… I think.

I loved/liked almost all of the audiobooks, but if I had to recommend you couple of them they will be The Cuckoo's Calling and The Silkworm by Robert Galbraith (J.K. Rowling), The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins, and The Martian by Andy Weir. The Hidden Masters of Marandur by Jack Campbell was also pretty good, but to listen to that one you need to listen to The Dragons of Dorcastle first and that one was just okay.

To celebrate my love for audiobooks I’m giving away One Audiobook from Audible. Winner’s choice of audiobook from the above list.

  1. I'd have to go with Raven Cursed (Jane Yellowrock #4) by Faith Hunter. I listened to the first 3 books, then kinda gave up cuz I just wasn't feeling it. I liked Blood Cross, but after that it went downhill for me. So many people love this series though that I feel like I should give it a second chance. Thanks for making your giveaway international, unlike our fearless leader. ;)

    1. I like the series, but Jane frustrates me a bit with all the self loathing and guilt trips.

  2. I'm leaning towards The Martian by Andy Weir; I've heard some REALLY good things about it but I'm not sure I'd be able to get into the print version.

    1. The audiobook is Amazing! The narrator is one of the best I have ever listened. He really nailed the narration.

  3. Way to go Marcela!! And you reviewed them all!! I'm totally impress!! I can see you can finish and audiobook in less than a day! That's my junkie :) I stop for a minute with my current listen to start the Martian and I was torn and I had a hard time put it down, to go back to my other listen :)

    1. Yes! if the audio is less than 10 hours I can finish it in a day... usually. About the reviews... I've been trying to write a least something short for each of them.

  4. WOW you have listened a lot!!! I wanna be you when I grow up ;) hahahahah

  5. GASP! DNF Dead of Winter?! Did you switch to reading it?

  6. I'd like to win Bound by Flames by Jeaniene Frost.

    1. It was good. I think I'm going to go back and listen to her previous books in audio.

  7. Reviewed and listened to 34 audiobooks! That's fantastic progress towards the Challenge Marcela! I see you power listened to the Kate Daniels Series. I've always wanted to try that series!

    1. You should! Those books are made of awesome!! And the narrator is excellent. I'm sure you are going to love them.

  8. I'm so impressed with your progress... You're doing awesome!

Last year, I listened to 48 audiobooks, this year I'm aiming for 50+ audiobooks.... But I'm having a listening slump so far this year and have only managed to listening 4 audiobooks. So, I'd better step up the pace next quarter!

Here's a link to my audiobook update:

    Happy listening!!

    1. Thank you! Last year I listened to 44 audios, I'm sure (hope) I'm going to surpass that this year.
I saw you listened to Hour Game by David Baldacci and liked it. I have always wanted to try one of Baldacci's books, maybe I should check Hour Game.

  9. I would have to look at which one of the Faith Hunters I don't have--that one is next up on my marathon list :)

Great job! WE are so going to clear this by July :)

    1. I really hope so, but I'm not so sure because I have slow down a lot these las weeks. I need to pick up my pace again.

  10. DNF Kcole?? I know it's not stellar but DNF is harsh. That bad eh?

Congrats, you did super well! the remaining 15 books would be abreeze!

    1. It wasn't bad, it was a mix of things. First, I wasn't in the mood for YA and for some reason I couldn't stand the narrator. The weird thing is that I liked her narration of previous two books. I guess it was one of those "it's me, not you" cases.

  11. Poison Study (Study #1) by Maria V. Snyder

  12. Great job. I'm so amazed and blown away!! Thanks for the giveaway. I've heard great things about Jane Yellowrock, so I'd pick the first book in the series.

    1. Thank you! The Jane Yellowrock is a really good series and the narrator is the amazing Khristine Hvam!
