Audiobook Review: Triptych by Karin Slaughter

Title: Triptych
Author: Karin Slaughter
Narrated by: Michael Kramer
Series: Will Trent, book 1
Genre: Mystery
Publisher: Books on Tape
Format: Audiobook
Length: 13 hrs and 20 mins
In the city of Atlanta, women are dying—at the hands of a killer who signs his work with a single, chilling act of mutilation. Leaving behind enough evidence to fuel a frenzied police hunt, this cunning madman is bringing together dozens of lives, crossing the boundaries of wealth and race. And the people who are chasing him must cross those boundaries too. Among them is Michael Ormewood, a veteran detective whose marriage is hanging by a thread—and whose arrogance and explosive temper are threatening his career. And Angie Polaski, a beautiful vice cop who was once Michael's lover before she became his enemy.

But another player has entered the game: a loser ex-con who has stumbled upon the killer's trail in the most coincidental of ways—someone who may be the key to breaking the case wide open.
Lately I’ve been in a weird reading/listening mood. I’m not enjoying the genres I used to enjoy or the authors I used to love. For that reason, everyday I’m in search of something new, trying to discover what is what I like now. During that search I came along Triptych, first book in the Will Trent series by Karin Slaughter. One of the things that made me decide to listen to this audiobook was that Michael Kramer narrated it. Kramer is one of the first narrators I ever listen and I can almost say that thanks to him I felt in love with audiobooks. When I see his name on an audiobook I can trust is going to be good.

Slaughter is a very smart writer. She makes you believe something to then open a different door to show you what you thought was wrong. I love when authors can keep me on my toes wondering what is coming next -and lucky for me- Slaughter is one of those authors.

I have a soft spot for flawed characters and that is just what I found in Triptych. I loved that Will Trent is dyslexic and that despite his disability he has had an excellent career as an agent for the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.
I’m not sure what to think about Angie Polaski, the vice cop, childhood friend and on and off girlfriend of Trent. After finishing this book I’m still on the fence in regards to her.
One character that I really liked and broke my heart was the ex-con John Shelly. I liked that despite everything that happened to him he was still somewhat innocent.
I can’t say much about detective Michael Ormewood or the story itself without giving spoilers away and this is a mystery where every single detail should be discovered by the reader/listener. The only thing I can say is that I was completely engrossed by the story from beginning to end. I devoured this audiobook in a day and as soon as I finished it I bought second book in the series, Fracture, which I already listened and loved.

As I was expecting, Michael Kramer does an excellent job with the narration, he brings to life the characters and infuses the narration with all the mystery and darkness of the story.

Triptych is not for the faint of heart, it’s disturbing, chilling, suspenseful and very dark and I loved every single second of it.

I recommend this audiobook to mystery and thriller fans or to anyone who wants to listen to an addictive-disturbing-psychological-awesome book.

My Story Verdict: 5 Paws
My Narration Verdict: 5 Paws
My Overall Verdict: 5 Paws
