Series: Kingmaker Chronicles, book 1
Genre: Fantasy Romance
Publisher: Sourcebooks Casablanca
Source: Review copy from publisher
Format: E-book

“Cat” Catalia Fisa lives disguised as a soothsayer in a traveling circus. She is perfectly content avoiding the danger and destiny the Gods—and her homicidal mother—have saddled her with. That is, until Griffin, an ambitious warlord from the magic-deprived south, fixes her with his steely gaze and upsets her illusion of safety forever.

Griffin knows Cat is the Kingmaker, the woman who divines the truth through lies. He wants her as a powerful weapon for his newly conquered realm—until he realizes he wants her for much more than her magic. Cat fights him at every turn, but Griffin’s fairness, loyalty, and smoldering advances make him increasingly hard to resist and leave her wondering if life really does have to be short, and lived alone.
A Promise of Fire is the first book in the Kingmaker Chronicles by Amanda Bouchet.

I’m always searching for new books to fall in love with. When I friend who knows my taste on books recommend me A Promise of Fire I knew I have to give it a try, even though I was going through a reading slump. Reading slump that soon got forgotten when I found myself totally immersed in the wonderful world Amanda Bouchet created for this series.

Catalia “Cat” Fisa has the power to know when somebody lies; a power many want to use and abuse. Knowing people will do anything to have a soothsayer in their power Cat does the only thing she can to be safe, she hides in a traveling circus. For years she has been living in anonymity with the circus, traveling from one place to another; but everything changes when a warlord, after meeting her realizes what she truly is, a King Maker.
The last thing Griffin wants is to kidnap the soothsayer, but he knows having a King Maker in his power will change everything for him and his family.
Griffin has just conquered a realm, he did it to help people with no magic- like himself and his family- that have been abused for centuries by magic users. Griffin knows he is at a disadvantage from magic practitioners and his newly conquered realm is at danger. He knows having Cat working for them will turn the tables in their favor, but he will much prefer if she does it on her own volition and not because she is forced to do it.
Cat fights and try to escape every chance she gets, but after spending time with Griffin and his friends she starts to realize he is not the villain she thought him to be and after meeting his family and seeing their interactions she can’t help but wonder if a life in hiding and on the run is what she really wants.

A Promise of Fire has the perfect balance of fantasy, romance, smart dialogue, fun moments, and multilayered characters to produce a wonderful and an unforgettable story.
Amanda Bouchet’s writing is vivid and fluid; I loved how she mixed Greek mythology with the fantasy aspects of the story. I also loved how she uses humor to lighten up the mood and to make the characters more endearing. The world building is very complex, well thought and very well depicted.

A Promise of Fire is a great debut and a book I recommend to fantasy romance fans. I can’t wait to get my hands on the second installment of this series, Breath of Fire. January 3rd, 2017 can’t come soon enough.

My Verdict: 4 ½ Paws
